The Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) was introduced by the Government of India in year 1950 to ensure a steady flow of skilled workers in different trades for the domestic industry, to raise quantitatively and qualitatively the industrial production by systematic training, to reduce unemployment among the educated youth by providing them employable skills, to cultivate and nurture a technical and industrial attitude in the minds of younger generation.
Vocational Training is a concurrent subject of both Central and State Governments. The development of training schemes at National level, the evolution of policy, laying of training standard, norms, conducting of examinations, certification, etc. are the responsibilities of the central government, whereas, day to day administration including an admission in ITIs rests with the respective State Governments / UTs.
Presently, training courses under the Craftsmen Training Scheme are being offered through a network of 15,042 ITIs (Govt. 2,738 + Private 12,304) located all over the country with total trainees enrolled 22.82 lakhs (in the trades of 1 year and 2 year durations) on NCVTMIS portal with an objective to provide skilled workforce to the industry in 138 NSQF compliant trades.
DGT is in process of constantly upgrading and modernizing the ITIs in terms of their infrastructure, pedagogy, curriculum and technology interventions. Accordingly, new-age courses in IoT, Renewable Energy, Additive Manufacturing Technology (3-D Printing), Mechatronics, Drone Technology, Artificial Intelligence Programming Assistant etc. have been recently introduced in the ITIs.
National Skill training Institute, Chennai is an Institute under Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India is conducting CTS courses under the aegis of NCVT in the following trades:

Start of session: 1st August of every year.
Eligibility for Admission: Passed 10th class examination or equivalent.
Admission & Award of Certificate: Candidates can enroll for the above programmes for one year. A candidate has to secure 60% Sessional marks in Theory and Practicals and also have a minimum of 80% attendance. On possessing the above requisites, candidates will be allowed to appear for the final examination conducted by NCVT, New Delhi in June/July every year. On passing the prescribed exam, trainees will be awarded the Certificate from NCVT.

**Girl candidates admitted in NSTI under CITS and CTS are exempted from tuition and examination fee.
Hostel: Hostel facilities are available for trainees on payment of Rs. 100/- per month as Hostel Rent and Rs. 50/- as Hostel service charge. Hostel Caution money Rs. 250/- per session (Refundable) are also to be deposited for availing hostel. Mess charges extra to be borne by the candidates.
Games: Games Facilities are available.
Working Hours: From 09.00 am to 5.30 pm with half hour lunch break on all working days (Monday to Friday).
Attendance: Minimum 80% attendance is required to appear in the Final Trade Test to be held at the end of the course.
